Design is fun! It Should be fun!

What is User Experience, without bringing people a JOY through their experience. Banana Products, LLC nailed it with this banana safety cone.

Speaking from the point of view of a person who has actually slipped on a banana peal, I can testify that this safety cone caught my attention a lot more effectively than a normal boring safety cone would (which lets be honest, we all ignore).

I was curious so I looked into their design strategy, and they had it available on their website!

Looks like they did a competitive analysis, usability testing and comparison with existing products, and even provided a nice survey/chart of user feedback. They concluded that more than 80% of people noticed the cone over the normal sign. That's pretty great statistics.

Just goes to show that design can be both whimsical and highly functional. Let's not think that methodology means that we can't have fun. The very core of user experience is to bring that joy to users, and simple examples like these show that there are ways we can work with people's desire for fun, for real everyday purposes and tasks.
